The AI price war heats up

Google's Gemini crossed 1 billion monthly active users on August 11, a milestone that underscores how quickly consumer AI adoption has scaled over the past year. Days later, OpenAI answered by cutting ChatGPT pricing roughly 80% and making the new GPT-5.6 Luna model its free-tier default — a clear signal that the leading labs are now competing as much on price and distribution as on raw capability.

Not to be outdone, DeepSeek raised pricing on its V4 Flash model by 93% on August 14, while newer entrants like DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731, Meta's Muse Spark 1.1, and Thinking Machines' Inkling continued to ship at a rapid clip.
