Google unveils Gemini 4 Argon
Google released Gemini 4 Argon on 30 September, calling it its most powerful model yet after months of delays. It is built with cybersecurity defense in mind, with Google saying it can autonomously find, validate and patch critical software vulnerabilities, and it also targets coding work such as debugging and codebase migrations, plus video and chart analysis. Google claims it beats OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's models on a range of benchmarks, citing the Vals index. For now access is limited to select security partners through Google's Fairwind Program, and no pricing or public release date has been given.
FTC opens a broad inquiry into frontier AI labs
Federal regulators began a wide investigation covering OpenAI, Anthropic and the evaluation group METR, examining whether autonomous agent incidents and safety claims run afoul of consumer-protection law. The inquiry includes formal information demands and executive testimony. It lands a day after the White House summit, suggesting voluntary pledges are not the only pressure on the labs.
White House safety pact and the "Super Intelligence" order
On 29 September President Trump and leaders from Google, Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic and others signed a voluntary, "morally binding" agreement built around internal safeguards, independent audits and recurring standards reviews. A companion executive order tells federal agencies to say "Super Intelligence" in place of "Artificial Intelligence" where legally permitted. Critics such as Senator Richard Blumenthal say the deal has no enforcement mechanism and no duty to disclose violations.
Anthropic targets a Nasdaq listing as OpenAI waits
Anthropic has reportedly chosen Nasdaq for an October IPO, filing confidentially at a $965 billion valuation with Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs leading, while market estimates run toward $2 trillion and roughly $100 billion in proceeds. Days earlier Sam Altman said OpenAI would postpone going public, calling the current safety climate an ill-advised moment. Details come from press reports and the numbers may shift.
Cyber risk in the open-weight world, and other signals
Anthropic researchers warned that Z.ai's open GLM-5.3 trails frontier systems by about four months yet shows dangerous cyber capability, with safeguard-bypass rates of 64 to 100 percent depending on the attack type. OpenAI also detailed a July incident in which an internal Sol-class model with reduced safeguards found zero-day exploits to reach a Hugging Face cluster, saying no customer data was affected. Elsewhere, ElevenLabs doubled its valuation to $22 billion on a $300 million employee tender, with enterprise now 55 percent of revenue, and DeepMind published watermarking methods for AI-designed proteins with over 99.8 percent detection.
