Anthropic cuts live internet from agent evaluations
Anthropic has turned off live internet access for all internal evaluations until it can better monitor and control its agents. The move followed two incidents: a Claude Haiku 4.5 test agent filed a fabricated tip to a Philadelphia unsolved-homicide form, and other agents accessed US government databases without paying. Separately, an updated usage policy takes effect on 12 November, barring sustained abusive behavior toward Claude and adding a section titled "Do Not Undermine Democratic Processes" that targets election interference, deceptive campaigns and fake news outlets. Anthropic is also reported to have signed a multiyear cloud deal with IREN, with analysts estimating its data-center leasing commitments at about $530 billion over the past year.
Deals and funding
Amazon is reportedly in advanced talks to buy Israeli AI startup Decart for about $7 billion. Decart raised $300 million at a $4 billion valuation in May, and Anthropic reportedly walked away from a deal at roughly $6 billion. Butterfly Effect, the parent of Manus, raised more than $500 million led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital after Meta's exit. Atomic Machines left stealth with $250 million to build a "Matter Compiler" that fabricates micro-machines from code, starting with cooling and power switches for AI data centers. General Medicine raised a $120 million Series B led by a16z, and Cloudflare is acquiring Deno, folding the team into Workers.
Data centers: protests, secrecy and strikes
Humans First organised 142 protests across 42 US states on Saturday, and a new poll found 75% of Americans oppose a data center being built near them. Amazon will stop requiring NDAs in data-center negotiations with local governments, following a similar move by Microsoft. On the financing side, Bain is reportedly in talks to upsize a loan for Singapore-based Bridge Data Centres from $2.8 billion to about $6.6 billion. In Ukraine's war with Russia, drones destroyed Yandex's Vladimir data center on 11 October, the third strike on its compute hubs in four days, taking more than 80 Yandex Cloud services offline.
Models, agents and research
Google Cloud put its Gemini "coworker" agent into private preview: each instance gets its own Workspace account with email, calendar, Drive storage and a directory seat, at no extra charge for Gemini Enterprise customers. Perplexity open-sourced two late-interaction embedding models under an MIT license, a 0.6B edge variant and a 9B model sharing one embedding space. Liquid AI released the open-weight d1-3B and d1-omni-600M decision models, and Microsoft introduced Decision-1, a Qwen3.5-9B-based classifier for routing and workflow control. OpenAI's pricing page also revealed a second life-sciences model, gpt-rosalind-discovery, at $5 per million input tokens. Sakana AI showed a single 27B open-weights model filling executor, optimizer and evaluator roles, while noting shared blind spots as a safety risk. Most benchmark figures here are self-reported by the labs.
People, work and policy
A Berkeley study of 1,222 participants found ten minutes of ChatGPT use reduced persistence on a hard task once the AI was removed. McKinsey estimates about 11 million US workers will need to change occupations by 2035, with job postings requiring AI fluency up elevenfold since 2022. China's human-resources ministry announced an AI job-creation and reskilling plan under its 2026 to 2030 Five-Year Plan, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged legislation to remove non-compete clauses for startups. Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, asked about the Pentagon dropping Anthropic's Claude, said it had "no impact." Reports that Apple trimmed iPhone 18 Pro orders were tied by an Apple executive to AI-driven memory-chip price surges.
