Security: AI agents in the attacker's toolkit
Reuters reports that a Chinese-speaking hacker breached the websites of more than 100 companies, with AI agents handling many of the complex intrusion steps and little human involvement. The campaign reportedly cost only a few thousand dollars. A related Guardian report says Anthropic's offensive research team built a program that spread across 15 internet-connected smart TVs, and that similar IoT-scale worms could be feasible by year end. On the defensive side, Microsoft added controls in Microsoft 365 E7 and Project Perception that assess individual agents for risk, letting administrators block changes, require human approval or shut an agent down. Anthropic also launched a free OSS Scanner that runs periodic vulnerability scans on critical open-source projects, and CyberSN data shows US cybersecurity postings down 26.4 percent through September while AI Security Engineer postings rose 268.3 percent year over year.
Money and markets
Per Reuters, OpenAI is racing to lock in investor commitments in a round that could value it above 1.4 trillion dollars, ahead of Anthropic's expected IPO. Anthropic says it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund LLC, subject to stockholder approval, and is heading toward a November IPO. Disney will reportedly offer jobs to at least 60 Character.AI employees, an estimated 60 million dollars in annual compensation, after Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 earlier in the week. SemiAnalysis expects roughly 50 GW of new data center capacity in 2027, with another 60 GW already under construction, and suggests chips and memory may be the next bottleneck.
Policy and legal
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Department of Homeland Security has ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek technology and blocked future purchases of its products. A coalition of Canadian publishers including Postmedia and The Globe and Mail filed a copyright suit in Ontario alleging Anthropic trained Claude on their content without permission; these are unproven allegations. The World Bank urged developing countries to build small AI models that run on phones, with low connectivity and in local languages.
Models and products
DeepSeek released open weights for V4.1-Flash-1017 along with a search API priced at 0.75 dollars. Reflection AI's Beam is an open-weights 501 billion parameter model under Apache 2.0, reported at about 80 percent on Terminal-Bench 2.1. Inception's Mercury 3 is a diffusion language model the company says exceeds 1,000 tokens per second, and MiniMax M3.1 Flash claims nearly 3x faster inference and 70 percent lower usage costs. Black Forest Labs' FLUX 3 Max is said to generate a 10-second video clip in about 12 seconds. ChatGPT can now use open Chrome tabs as context and take actions such as filling forms or downloading files, and Amazon opened a public beta of TorchNeuron for running PyTorch workloads on Trainium chips. Sam Altman confirmed OpenAI will build a humanoid robot with a demo planned for 2027. These performance figures are vendor reported.
Infrastructure and work
Meta published a look inside Prometheus, its gigawatt-scale AI supercluster in Ohio that it says supports its Muse model family. Nvidia's Vera team says agentic AI is pushing data center CPU design back toward single-threaded performance. Anthropic reports the junior technical hire share fell from 27 percent to 9 percent, and PostgreSQL 19's general availability slipped to November after LLM-assisted reviews found about 40 defects.
